Avatar Three-D review

I must say that it was a well-spent 2.5 hrs watching Avatar today! It was my first ever 3D movie and it sure was impressive. Prior to the movie, i was expecting the quality of the movie to be somewhat similar to the "3D" rides i took in Genting Highlands years ago (never fail to give me a headache after those rides)...little did i expect it to be rather mind-blowing!

The texture and sharpness of the animation were smooooth in 3D. The 3D goggles were pretty dirty though. I spent a well 2-3 mins figuring was it the movie that was kind of blurry or was it the thumbprints on the goggle lenses. A point to note, there was the occasional flicker between the left and right lenses... seems like the lenses+eyes were getting adjusted to the light or something like that...quite distracting at first but fortunately that didnt last through the show.

Animation wise, i can finally understand why they took years to come up with the final product. The designs of the environment and creatures featured in the movie were amazing, ideas totally from out of this world. The Na'vi characters exuded loads of emotions and expressions, so much so it brings me to picture them as equal beings...and not just some stupid aliens on a distant planet.

Though the plot of the movie seems relatively simple and straight-forward, in my opinion, it hits home the point regarding the cause and effect of the unabating greed of the human race. I would say, on a sub-conscious level, it is delivering a message to the audience about what the human race has evolved into...just as the movie, District 9, would imply.

On a seperate note, i feel a few charactuers (played by Giovanni Ribisi, Joel Moore) in the movie would seem to be better off with other actors. However, i guess in a way this shows the diversity of the cast and for it to be all inclusive.

Several questions which i find interesting:

- What's the use of the face gear the Na'vi warriors wear when riding their Banshees? To shield off rain??

- And why didnt any Na'vi (before Jake Sully) thought of ambushing the super huge Banshee from the top?? seems so much easier i would say, unless they find it a distastefully "chicken" way to tackle the creature...

- What in the world is the mineral the humans are after?? so rare that it's worth 22mil per kilo...

- Lastly, i wonder how the Na'vi people mate...hmmm....and they speak of it so openly! shame on them...

Overall, given the magnitude of production and the movie living up to expectations, I would gladly rate the movie 4.5 / 5.

The virgin post...

This is my first foray into the world of blogging...figured that it's good time for me to start recording my thoughts and perceptions on things that i come across. There's hundreds if not zillions of things that run through my head each and every single day... and so i had better start recording them down before ,somehow or other, they start vanishing into thin air!

That will be all for now. Have a great year ahead in 2010 everyone!
